The UAE continues to make strides in enhancing the quality of life for its residents, with several new rules and regulations coming into effect in 2024. Here are three notable changes that have been introduced:

Ban on Single-Use Plastic Bags

As of January 1, 2024, a ban on the import and purchase of single-use plastic bags has been implemented across Dubai. Exceptions to this ban include thin-film rolls used for packaging specific food items and garbage bags. This initiative, spearheaded by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, aligns with the emirate’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Furthermore, from June 1, 2024, non-plastic single-use products will also be prohibited in Dubai. Non-compliance with these regulations will result in fines, with the initial phase focusing on single-use plastic bags.

Paid Parking in Dubai Mall

In a collaboration between Salik and Emaar Malls, a paid parking system will be introduced at the renowned Dubai Mall. This initiative will feature a barrier-free, automated process that utilizes vehicle plate recognition for payment. The charges will be deducted directly from the user’s Salik account, similar to the toll payment system. Anticipated to be implemented in the third quarter of 2024, this change will impact visitors to one of the world’s largest shopping destinations.

Temporary Pause on UAE Raffles and Prize Draws

As of January 1, 2024, popular prize draw activities, such as the well-known Mahzooz, have been temporarily suspended in compliance with new industry-wide gaming regulations in the UAE. This pause, in accordance with the regulators’ efforts to establish a well-regulated gaming environment, affects various raffles and prize draws across the country. Notably, Mahzooz, which has produced numerous winners and contributed significantly to the community, has put its operations on hold in line with these new mandates.

These recent changes reflect the UAE’s ongoing commitment to sustainable practices, improved services, and regulatory compliance. Stay informed about these developments to ensure a seamless experience within the country.
